Summer Love With Cloudy Rhodes, Johanna Bear and Traianos Pakioufakis

    November 14 2017

There’s a specific type of beauty, especially in Central Australia. It can feel like you’re on another planet.

As the change of season approaches, Map of the Heart talks to our Australian contributors about love, memory, and why they’re staying close to home this summer.

What do you love about summer?

    Surfing.

    Like… in Bondi? (Laughs)

No. Not Bondi (laughing). I guess I love the smell of salt, sex wax, sunscreen and hanging out with my friends. I don’t know… what do people normally say?

You can say anything. If you had to describe summer in three words…

Can we come back to this one?

Sure. What do you love most about living in Australia?

Having the city and beach so close together. I think geographically it’s such a cool place in the world, like you can be in the desert and then by the ocean.

So the polarity of the landscape.

    Yeah. And the people.

Do you think that Australias geography is what makes us special?

Yes. Definitely. I think that our isolation is what makes us unique, in that everyone is doing their own thing. But I also believe that it can be a disadvantage – being so disconnected from the rest of the world.

    Do you believe in love?

    Yes.

    What kind?

True love. I’m super romantic so I believe that you can find love and keep it forever.

“I feel like I’ve been stereotyped to the Clear Heart (laughs) but I like the Black Heart because it gives me edge."

What does your heart beat for?

    Movies.

Do you have a favourite film in particular?

Sure. ‘Knight of Cups’ by Terrence Malick or ‘Somewhere’ by Sofia Coppola.

Which is your favourite heart and why?

I feel like I’ve been stereotyped to the Clear Heart (laughs) but I like the Black Heart because it gives me edge.

So it makes you feel like more of an enigma.

Seriously. That’s what I crave in my life.

What is your first scent memory?

    Definitely sunscreen.

    Any specific SPF?

    I dunno, maybe 30+.

What is your favourite scent memory?

My favourite scent is when I’ve been away from the coast for a long time, and I come back to the smell of the beach again. You forget, but the beach has a distinct scent. It’s this mix of salt and humidity in the air… It’s hard to describe.

What do you love most about summer?

The general atmosphere in the city. Everyone feels so happy. That, and going to the beach and being on holidays. It’s always a fun and exciting time.

If you had to describe summer in three words…

    Salty, sun, spritz.

What do you think makes Australia unique?

I think the landscape is very unique. There’s a specific type of beauty, especially in Central Australia. It can feel like you’re on another planet.

Also the people. Australians are generally laid back and friendly. As soon as you arrive in Australia after being in Europe, there’s a very different feel. It’s a lot more relaxed and carefree.

    Do you believe in love?

Yes. You have to. How could you not?

What does your heart beat for?

Happiness, being with friends, and art.

If you had to pick your favourite Map of the Heart scent, what would it be and why

Gold Heart v.4 for so many reasons. It’s really comforting, and I’ve never smelt anything like it before. It’s so unique that people stop me on the street because they are blown away by the scent. Especially once they discover what’s in it. I love the bottle as well – it’s so luxurious and beautiful.

What is your earliest scent memory?

This is such an interesting question, and I’m struggling to think of what it would be. I think that my earliest memory, which sounds quite funny, would be this little toy I had when I was a kid. It had this very comforting scent, but I have no idea what it was.

“...there’s always this smell of fresh brewed coffee in the morning. It just evokes this lazy holiday family experience."

Like a synthetic scent? Or a muddy, gooey-like scent from being dirty?

Yeah. Probably because I would take it with my everywhere, so kind of gross when you think about it. But for me I found it so comforting. You could say it was the scent of my childhood adventures. Then I lost the toy, which was so devastating.

What is your favourite scent memory?

It’s strange because I feel like there are a lot of scents that I distinctly remember every time I smell them, but I really struggle to pinpoint exactly what they are. I think probably just when I’m on family holidays and at different houses, such as my own, or my aunts, there’s always this smell of fresh brewed coffee in the morning. It just evokes this lazy holiday family experience.

    TRAIANOS PAKIOUFAKIS

    Traianos Pakioufakis, Photographer

What do you love about summer?

Longer days and swimming first thing in the morning.

If you had to describe Summer in three words…

    Salty. Watermelon. Slow.

What do you think makes Australia unique?

Definitely the intense light. Overwhelming space. And the fact that 99% of the nation don’t really realise its unique qualities.

What does your heart beat for?

    Meg, light and shadow.

    Do you believe in love?

    Yes. Wholeheartedly.

    What kind of love?

    True love.

What is your favourite heart and why?

I can’t decide between Black and Clear, but I wear the Black more. I think because it feels like part of my uniform.

What is your first scent memory?

There’s two I always talk about. One is sprinklers and a garden hose on a summer’s day. And the other is leeks and parsley from my grandmother’s kitchen.

Is that your favourite scent memory?

    Yeah. It’s the most intense.
