Summer Love With Charlotte Agnew, Anna Pogossova and Duc Thinh Dong

    November 16 2017

It reminds me of hormones, confused sexuality, and all of the awkward experiences you have growing up.

As the change of season approaches, Map of the Heart talks to our Australian contributors about love, memory, and why they’re staying close to home this summer.

    CHARLOTTE AGNEW

    Charlotte Agnew, Stylist

What do you love about summer?

    Everyone’s smiles and salty swims.

If you had to describe summer in three words…

    Friends… Fun…

    Family?

(Laughs) Actually coconuts, Christmas and sunscreen.

What do you think makes Australia unique?

Lizards and snakes outside your door.

What does your heart beat for?

Right now a lot of Celine.

    Do you believe in love?

    Yes.

Which is your favourite heart and why?

    Pink. Colour of my heart.

What is your first scent memory?

    Whiteboard markers at primary school.

What is your favourite scent memory?

I feel like it hasn’t come yet.

What do you love about summer?

    The night swims!

If you had to describe Summer in three words…

    Sweltering. Sweaty. Balmy.

What do you think makes Australia unique?

That it can be remote and otherworldly, in its landscape, but also familiar at the same time. I remember when I first came to Australia, and having grown up in the Moscow, I saw a koala for the first time. It absolutely blew my mind. To this day, I just think they’re incredible. The flora and fauna here is really unique and cool. I know that because I came into this place having never seen anything like it before. It was wild.

What does your heart beat for?

Laughter, art, and miniature toiletries. Miniature sized travel toiletries are just, in the top five for me. But the other things come first, of course. And small animals. (Laughs).

Miniature toiletries. You read it here first.

“It was like hot welded metal, or a sparkler, gunpowder, sort of smell. Very elusive, very difficult to recreate, but also very special."

    Do you believe in love?

    Mostly, yes.

Which is your favourite heart and why?

Purple Heart. I love it. There’s certain types of perfumes which I generally go for because they react well on my skin, such as the ones which are warmer or milkier. I guess this would be the Gold Heart, but the purple has a similar affect when I wear it. I can’t quite process or unpack what it is. Every time I put it on I smell a different aspect of it, or notice a different part. I love all the ingredients and I just feel that it suits me.

What is your earliest scent memory?

It was the smell of the Moscow Metro which I remember growing up. I’ve been trying desperately to create something similar. It was like hot welded metal, or a sparkler, gunpowder, sort of smell. Very elusive, very difficult to recreate, but also very special.

What do you love about summer?

The thing that I love the most about summer is that your senses are heightened; everything’s brighter, everything feels more hyperreal.

If you had to describe summer in three words…

    Warmth. Sand. Spectral.

What do you think makes Australia unique?

    It’s wildlife.

What does your heart beat for?

    A connection.

“...I love the idea behind it. A heart of gold."

    Do you believe in love?

    Sure.

Which is your favourite heart and why?

Gold Heart, because I love the idea behind it. A heart of gold.

What is your first scent memory?

    Probably deodorant.

    Like an adolescent deodorant?

Yeah. It reminds me of hormones, confused sexuality, and all of the awkward experiences you have growing up.

What is your favourite scent memory?

    My parent’s bakery.
